Abstract
This study aims to evaluate and monitor drought conditions and analyze the trends of drought indices in Urmia County. The DIP software was utilized to calculate meteorological drought indices, and the values of these indices were estimated and analyzed for Urmia County over a 30-year period from 1994 to 2023. The observational results and charts indicate that the SPI, CZI, and ZSI indices follow a relatively similar trend and exhibit similar behavior in drought assessment. These three indices demonstrated good performance in monitoring meteorological drought in Urmia. After identifying the most suitable indices, drought trend analysis was conducted using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen’s slope method. The trend analysis of SPI, ZSI, and CZI indices showed an upward trend in all three indices; however, no significant trend was observed in the changes of these indices over the 1994–2023 period. These findings suggest that drought in this region does not follow a specific pattern of increase or decrease and is largely influenced by short-term climatic fluctuations
